Restaurants, takeaways and other caterers that offer healthier food can now apply for a Healthier Catering Award. This scheme is run by the council in partnership with the GLA (Greater London Authority), NHS Barnet and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. There are currently 20 London boroughs taking part in the scheme. The Healthier Catering scheme publicly recognises caterers who are seen to be: Eating well is an important factor in helping to reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity and stroke. The initiative is aimed at encouraging outlets to take some simple steps to reduce saturated fat and salt and offer healthier alternatives such as low sugar drinks or smaller portion sizes. All types of catering establishments are eligible to apply for the scheme including sandwich bars, pubs, restaurants, business caterers, leisure centres and take-aways. You will be given a certificate and a window sticker to promote your award on your premises. Caterers have found the award helps to increase the number of customers visiting their establishment and also to increase secondary spending, as people remained there for longer.
