The intertidal flora and fauna of the rocky shores of the eastern coastline of Foula, Shetland Isles, were surveyed during July/August 1980. Five primary shores were studied in detail : Da Rigs, North Boulder Beach, Ruscar, Head O'Da Taing, and Fisheads. Cover/abundance values were estimated fro the seaweeds and sedentary fauna present on the belt transects. Maps showing the accessibility, exposure and vulnerability to oil spillages were prepared for the island. Dogwhelk populations were sampled on each rpimary shore, length/aperture ratios calculated and related to wave exposure on each shore. The tidal range for the island is about 2m. Transects were set up from the low water mark to the top of the shore. Stations were located at 0.2m intervals up the shore. At each vertical station the abundance of the species present was recorded in a 5m * 0.2m quadrat. Shore profiles were also measured.
