Sentinel-2 Mosaics are a product of the Soil Occupation Monitoring System (SMOS), an innovative initiative, designed and developed by the Directorate-General of the Territory, with the aim of continuously producing cartographic information on land use and occupation. SMOS uses the latest developments in space technologies and Artificial Intelligence to create products with more detail, quality, speed and made available with open data policy. All products can be viewed in vismos. https://smos.dgterritorio.gov.pt/vi-smos
Sentinel-2 Mosaics are composed of images of the Sentinel-2 multispectral sensor acquired over the territory of mainland Portugal, providing two colour compositions: true color (RGB: red, green and blue), with the bands B4, B3 and B2 and false color (IRG: near-infrared, red and green), with the bands B8, B4 and B3, all with a spatial resolution of 10 m. The mosaics are made available monthly as they are produced, and they are expected to be published in the following month. The first mosaic dates from January 2017.
Each mosaic is created from several images of different dates acquired during the respective month. The result is a composite synthetic image, in which the values of a given pixel for a certain band of the Sentinel-2 image result from the median of all available images that month. However, there may occasionally be some problems (clouds or cloud shadows) that result from imperfections in the processing of the cloud mask. There may still be months where there are no cloudless images and these pixels are filled with values from the previous month. In this way, the quality of the mosaics may vary depending on the weather observed in a given month, and the production of monthly mosaics is expected to be more affected in the period between winter and spring. The monthly mosaics were calibrated at the level of the histograms and can be used in analyses of the phenological variation of vegetation or in comparisons of months in homologous periods (i.e., March 2020 with March 2021).
WMS services for Sentinel-2 mosaics are divided by year.
