The Nitrates Directive (Council Directive 91/676/EEC concerning the protection of waters against pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources) requires each Member State to monitor at certain intervals the nitrate content of waters at sites representative of their surface waters and groundwater. Sweden has also reported data on phosphorus concentrations in surface waters to the European Commission.
Data on nitrate and phosphorus concentrations come from measurement stations in the national and regional environmental monitoring programmes and coordinated recipient control.
The data hosts of the programmes have delivered the data to the Board of Agriculture, which has compiled the data and reported them to the European Commission.
