Creation of a soil type map for the area of the Thayatal National Park

The National Park Thayatal administration ordered a scientific study about the soils of the Austrian part of this cross-border protected area in Summer 2024. The fieldwork for the soil survey was carried between August and October 2024 obtained 15 soil profile descriptions and two Representative soil cores for demonstration purposes. The soil classification system has been applied based on a substrate type map on the basis of the geological maps of Austria, sheet 8 Geras and 9 Retz. For all important substrate type combinations the possible soil types in the settled area have been defined and representatively sampled. The soil profiles together with soil punctures build the data basis for the calibration of the soil type model being translated into a soil type map using relief form and slope raster by GIS methods. The resulting cartographic entities in addition to the substrate type provide information about the relevant soils and soil depths as well as ecological site information Like water holding capacity and nutrient supply.
