Mithilfe des epidemiologischen Abwassermonitorings kann die Verbreitung von ausgewählten Viren in der Bevölkerung nachvollzogen und Trends frühzeitig erkannt werden. Im Zulauf der ebswien Kläranlage fließt das gesamte Abwasser der Stadt Wien zusammen. Datenquelle sind die von der TU Wien gemessenen und geprüften Messdaten aus dem epidemiologischen Abwassermonitoring. Gemessen wird die Virenfracht (in Genkopien pro Tag) aus einer 24h-Mischprobe aus dem Zulauf der ebswien Kläranlage. An Tagen mit sogenannten Mischwasserereignissen in Wien (Starkregen, Schmelzwasser, etc.) wird der ungesicherte, gemessene Wert durch einen errechneten Wert ersetzt.
