Waste streams for incineration.

Every year, around four million tonnes of waste are incinerated or co-incinerated in Austrian incinerators. They are subject to the Waste Incineration Regulation and thus also emission limit values for air pollutants. The 2009-2018 emissions analysis shows that nitrogen oxides, dust, dioxins and furans from combustion have decreased while heavy metal emissions have increased. During the investigation period, about 70 % of the waste was used in waste incineration plants. The rest was incinerated in co-incineration plants and cement plants. As part of the analysis of the development of waste streams, pollutant loads and emission concentrations, the technical development of the incinerators, legal requirements as well as incinerated waste quantities and types of waste were taken into account.
