Proc. 2025, 35, 16. https://doi.org/10.3390/eesp2025035016  This study utilizes the EC-Earth3 Earth System Model [1] to investigate how interannual variability in biomass burning (BB) emissions influences variability in total aerosol optical depth (AOD), as well as carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O$_3$) tropospheric columns.  Hindcast simulations were conducted spanning 1997 - 2006 with EC-Earth3 in its atmosphere-only configuration (EC-Earth3-AerChem) [2] under three BB scenarios: base: BB emissions enabled mean: BB emissions with seasonal but no interannual variability zero: BB emissions nullified  Hindcasts utilized BB emissions as specified for the historical simulations of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (BB4CMIP6) [3]. We demonstrate (in notebook 02-Plot-AOD-CO-O3.ipynb) that fluctuations in biomass burning emissions impact AOD, CO, and O$_3$ variability at regional and global scales.
