EJP SOIL SANCHOSTHIRST Soil Dataset – Viñas del Vero/ Barbastro (Huesca)

This dataset corresponds to the Vero / Barbastro (Huesca) site within the H2020 EJP-SOIL project SANCHOSTHIRST, which investigates soil degradation and the long-term effects of cover crops in semi-arid vineyards and olive orchards. The site is located on conglomerates, sands, and gypsum, and the soils are classified as a Calcaric Gypsisol (D) / Haplic Calcisol with loam texture. Two adjacent vineyard plots were sampled: one managed under long-term spontaneous cover crops (CC) and the other under conventional tillage (TILL). Soil samples were collected once in autumn 2023, following a standardized protocol for both treatments. For each management practice, three composite soil samples were formed from six subsamples per composite, and samples were taken at two depths (10 cm and 30 cm). The dataset includes physicochemical variables (pH, EC, SOC, nitrogen, CaCO₃, texture), water retention parameters (field capacity, permanent wilting point, available water), bulk density, porosity, and biological indicators such as β-glucosidase activity. Vegetation cover and biomass variables are also provided, and all sampling points include GPS coordinates. The data follow FAIR principles and are released under a CC BY 4.0 licence to support transparency, reuse, and integration into broader soil health assessments.
