Dataset description

The following dataset contains coefficients of forest biomass carbon (C) growth curves which were derived within the EU project LAMASUS based on idealized simulations with the land surface models ORCHIDEE v2.2 and LPJmL v4.0. The dataset is part of deliverable D5.1 of the LAMASUS project. The response functions represent growth of forest biomass C stocks after afforestation and have the form of following equation:  BM(t) = BMmax * (1 - exp(-t/τ)) BM is the biomass in kg C m-2 of a forest with an age of t years, BMmax is the potential biomass in kg C m-2 that could be reached, τ is a parameter that describes the speed of biomass growth. The coefficients of these response curves are given in the netcdf files listed in the table below. This table further lists the forest land use management (LUM) classes of the LUM database (See et al., 2025, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15488011) for which these coefficients are representative. For the response functions derived from ORCHIDEE simulations, we have coefficients representative for the historical period (between 1950 and today) and the future periods until the end of the 21st century under high (SSP-RCP 126) and low (SSP-RCP 370) mitigation scenarios. For the response curves we derived from LPJmL, we only have the future projections. For recent historical scenarios, we recommend using the SSP-RCP 126 scenario. Note that we have two versions of response functions for “Short rotation coppice”. The one denoted by “rotation 28yrs” is most useful if biomass C stocks are only to be projected for up to three decades into the future. For longer projections, we recommend the coefficients from the files denoted by “rotation_81yrs”.  Table: List of files with coefficients for biomass carbon stock growth curves representing afforestation.
