Water bodies under the Water Framework Directive

A body of surface water within the meaning of the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000) is a distinct and significant part of surface water, such as a lake, reservoir, stream, river or canal, part of a stream, river or canal, transitional waters or part of coastal waters. A body of groundwater means a body of groundwater. Under the Directive, a body of groundwater is defined as a homogeneous mass of groundwater stored in aquifers or aquifers. In order to organise water management, surface waters are divided into types according to geographical and scientific characteristics. Surface waters may, under certain conditions, be designated as artificial or heavily modified. Surface water bodies fall into one of the following categories: lake, river and coastal water. The same water body cannot belong to more than one subdivision group. Groundwater bodies comprise groundwater areas important for water supply and suitable for water supply (i.e. so-called Category 1 and Category 2 groundwater areas) and groundwater areas with additional E status (categories 1E, 2E and E) which are directly dependent on groundwater for their surface water or terrestrial ecosystem. This dataset includes surface and groundwater bodies. The boundaries of water bodies have been revised during the planning period. The environmental administration's internal use includes data from three planning periods. Syke's Open Data service distributes data from the second and third planning periods. The data is included in SYKE's open data (CC BY 4.0). An INSPIRE data product has been published from the data of the 3rd planning period. The surface water bodies shall be identified as falling within either one of the following surface water categories - rivers, lakes, transitional waters or coastal waters - or as artificial surface water bodies or heavily modified surface water bodies. For each surface water category, the surface water bodies shall be differentiated according to type. These types are defined using geographical and natural characteristics. The groundwater bodies are divided into areas that are important for water supply, suitable for water supply and/or groundwater bodies whose groundwater a surface water or terrestrial ecosystems are directly dependent on. The boundaries of water bodies have been revised between planning periods. Data from three planning periods are in the internal use of the environmental administration.
