Dataset description

**This dataset includes EAD XML inventories extracted from the General Manuscript Catalogue (GMC).** ### Description of the General Catalogue of Manuscripts (CGM) The CGM includes a description of the manuscripts and archival holdings of public libraries, other than BnF and higher education libraries. The CGM is one of three French online catalogues of manuscripts kept in libraries, with BnF Archives et manuscripts (for the BnF) and Calames (for higher education institutions). After the initial loading, resulting from the retroconversion of the printed volumes of the General Catalogue of Manuscripts of French Public Libraries (CGMBPF), several institutions joined the CGM and participate in its enrichment. Since January 2019, the CGM has been directly updated by institutions, using the TapIR tool developed by the BnF. The location of several inventories is currently uncertain due to the age of the census, which began in the 19th century. These inventories are listed in the accompanying file by the words "To be completed" indicated in the columns "Department" and "City". ### Description of the dataset The CGM is presented in the form of EAD XML files and an archived EAD DTD file in the form of a 7z file. Each file is named as follows: * A prefix: FRCGMBPF (inventories of the CGMBPF), FRCGMNOV (new inventories created with TapIR) or FRCGMSUP (additions to the CGMBPF), * The CPR number of the conservation institution, consisting of 9 digits (the first 2 digits correspond to the number of the department, the next 3 to the INSEE code of the municipality in which the equipment is located, the next 2 to the type of library, and the last 2 to the sequential number), * The inventory number within the institution. The letter at the end of a file lets you know if an inventory had to be cut into several files, for size reasons. The FRCGMBPF-693836101-01a to FRCGMBPF-693836101-01f files thus correspond to a single inventory divided into 6 parts. The suffix of inventories created with TapIR is not significant. ### Find out more * On the general catalogue of manuscripts: <https://www.bnf.fr/en/le-catalogue-general-des-manuscrits-cgm> * On the EAD: <https://www.bnf.fr/ead-encoded-archival-description> CPR numbers for conservation establishments can be found in the CCFr Directory: <https://ccfr.bnf.fr/portailccfr/jsp/public/index.jsp?action=public_formsearch_institution>

Questions before production use

Practical answers on evaluation, licensing, freshness, versioning and support.

Yes. Selected APIs include a free API quota, so your team can validate coverage, freshness, response shape and workflow fit before asking for a production plan.
Often yes, but usage rights depend on the source license and dataset. We surface source, license and update metadata where available, and can help review terms before a production integration.
Maintained APIs include update metadata where available. For production integrations, we can add history, monitoring and push updates so changes are easier to detect and act on.
Production APIs can add SLA, stable identifiers, versioning support, history, push updates and direct support around the data your product or AI workflow depends on.
