Dataset description

> **\[MAJ 30/06/2025] New urban areas are available: Arles, Cholet, La Roche-sur-Yon, Montauban, Narbonne.** > \[MAJ 10/12/2024] Following user feedback and changes, a new version of the data is made available for download.** ### **Cartography of the** _**Local Climate Zones**_ **(LCZ) carried out on the 88 urban areas with more than 50,000 inhabitants in mainland France using SPOT satellite data from 2022.** The 88 urban areas were defined on the basis of data [Urban Atlas 2018](https://land.copernicus.eu/en/products/urban-atlas/urban-atlas-2018) (and Cerema data for 5 territories not covered by the Urban Atlas \[Arles, Cholet, La Roche-sur-Yon, Montauban, Narbonne]), and the production of this LCZ data was based on the [annual SPOT 2022 coverage](https://dinamis.data-terra.org/spot-6-7-couverture-france-metropolitaine-2022) acquired under DINAMIS and the [BD TOPO](https://geoservices.ign.fr/bdtopo) of the IGN (v3.3 of December 2022). This LCZ data can be used as a large-scale diagnosis of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon in your territory. It constitutes a climate pre-diagnosis taking into account urban morphology and land cover: the aim is to locate the islands/districts with stakes on which to refine the analyses and prioritize the actions. ![Map of LCZ data on metropolitan territory.](https://www.data.gouv.fr/en/datasets/r/be93111a-693a-4a6d-b518-e3b2311661c2 "Map of LCZ data on metropolitan territory.") Online data visualisation is available on the Cerema portal [Cartagene](https://cartagene.cerema.fr/portal/apps/dashboards/08066acd23974111be1584a5761fd6b9). You can use this portal to locate the urban area to which your territory is attached and download the data directly. The list of municipalities covered by each urban area is also provided in a CSV file downloadable below and available directly on [explore.data.gouv.fr](https://explore.data.gouv.fr/en/resources/fb8028d6-8018-40fa-b655-4672e8f6feaf). Delivery shall take the form of a compressed file (.zip) per urban area, comprising: * vector LCZ mapping (.shp), accompanied by a QGIS symbology (.qml), * LCZ cartography rasterized at 1.5 m (.tif), accompanied by a QGIS symbology (.qml), * metadata associated with vector LCZ mapping (.xml), * a map showing the data on the urban area (.pdf), * a delivery description and content description (.pdf). For specific purposes, aggregated data at national level may also be made available: [satellite@cerema.fr](mailto:satellite@cerema.fr?subject=Cartography%20national%20LCZ) Should you have any queries relating to this data, please do not hesitate to contact us: [satellite@cerema.fr](mailto:satellite@cerema.fr?subject=Cartography%20national%20LCZ)

Questions before production use

Practical answers on evaluation, licensing, freshness, versioning and support.

Yes. Selected APIs include a free API quota, so your team can validate coverage, freshness, response shape and workflow fit before asking for a production plan.
Often yes, but usage rights depend on the source license and dataset. We surface source, license and update metadata where available, and can help review terms before a production integration.
Maintained APIs include update metadata where available. For production integrations, we can add history, monitoring and push updates so changes are easier to detect and act on.
Production APIs can add SLA, stable identifiers, versioning support, history, push updates and direct support around the data your product or AI workflow depends on.
