Marks of provenance in old books kept at the Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon

In order to contribute to the material and historical study of the book and to the virtual reconstruction of currently dispersed libraries, the BML files a dataset of the marks of provenance present in its old books. These marks exist in several forms: ex-libris, handwritten annotations, stamps, armored bindings, etc. They illustrate the historical journey of these works, their places of circulation and their uses, from their printing to their entry into the Lyon collections. The ‘Provenance’ database, now available in the form of a dataset, brings together these marks identified and described according to a precise typology: stamps, bindings, printed vignettes, handwritten notes, etc. … Each entry is associated with data and metadata: description of the mark, identification of the owner or reader, dating (sometimes approximate), rating, bibliographic sources. **No update planned**: this documentary project is closed at the Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, but remains accessible for research, valorisation or re-use.
