In the 1930s, the first inmates of the Neumünster prison went to Givenich to carry out agricultural work. In 1956, the Givenich site became a semi-open prison with the construction by the State of a residential building comprising 27 individual cells. In order to comply with international standards on the separation of detainees and accused persons, the Luxembourg authorities launched in 2016 the construction of a second closed prison on the municipal territory of Sanem. The Prison Service was set up in 2018 under the supervision of the Ministry of Justice.
