Socio-economic status scores of private households on 1 January (01/01/2014 - 02/01/2014)

This analysis file contains the socioeconomic status scores of all private households in the Netherlands. Socioeconomic Status Scores (SES-WOA scores) are based on financial prosperity, educational attainment and recent household employment history (WOA). More information on how to access the data: > https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/onze-diensten/maatwerk-en-microdata/microdata-zelf-onderzoek-doen ### Methodology The socioeconomic status scores (SES-WOA scores) are based on financial prosperity, educational attainment and the recent employment history of households. The SES-WOA total score as well as the subscores for financial prosperity, education level and recent employment history per household have been calculated using a Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA). Input for the MCA is for all households in the Netherlands: — The rural welfare decile group where the household falls into (10 categories); — The level of education of the household according to the 2nd digit of the Standard Education Classification (SOI) (5 categories); — The recent employment history of the household in seven categories. Deciel Groups of Financial Prosperity Households are classified into deciel groups in terms of their financial welfare position. The allocation of households to those deciel groups is based on all households in the Netherlands. These are ranked from low to high by financial prosperity and then divided into ten consecutive groups of equal size: the deciel groups. For households in the 1st deciel group, these are among the 10 % households with the lowest financial prosperity. For households in the 10th percentile group, these are among the 10 % households with the highest financial prosperity. The deciel group of a household indicates where this household is located in the distribution of all households in the Netherlands. So it’s a relative measure. This means that the deciel group of a household does not change if the financial prosperity of all households increases or decreases equally. Level of education The level of education of a household is determined by the highest attainment level of the main cost winner or any partner. Because the education level file does not contain the educational level of all Dutch people, missing values are imputated using multinomial logistic regression. The imputation is performed fifteen times (multiple imputation). In the analysis file the subscores education level are therefore included fifteen times. As indicated above, the observation of the level of education of households has statistical uncertainty due to the partial sampling observation (see above). This uncertainty is reflected in the SES-WOA score. Therefore, the SES-WOA score is also calculated fifteen times on the basis of the fifteen imputations of educational attainment and the fifteen values of the total score are included in the analysis file. Recent employment history The recent employment history indicates whether a person has worked in the past 4 years. The recent employment history of a household is determined on the basis of the highest employment history of the main earner and the potential partner on 31 December of the previous year. An exception is the situation in which the main earner has pension in the year under review as the main source of personal income. In this case, the household is classified as “retired”. ### Population The population consists of (persons in) private households on 1 January of the year under review. Private households whose income is not known are excluded. This often concerns migrants, expats and staff of foreign companies/institutions.
