UNESCO World Heritage

On the basis of the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972), a UNESCO World Heritage List was established, including cultural, natural or mixed goods. This is an open list, updated every year. There are places of outstanding and timeless value for humanity, as expressed by the judgment of a unique universal value. An inscribed good may consist of one or more components located in one or more countries expressing common values, defined by 10 criteria (six cultural and four natural ones). An application for entry on the World Heritage List shall be submitted by the State on whose territory the site is located, by the World Heritage Committee after consulting the ICOMOS (International Council for the Conservation of Monuments) or IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) advisory organisations.
