Estonian Place Names Register

The Place Names Register is a state register, the purpose of which is to collect and register information on Estonian place names, to process and preserve it, and to make it available to users. The following shall be entered in the Place Names Register: official place names (main name and, if available, parallel name); unofficial place names (unofficial first name, unofficial other names); data on source documents for place names; data on named features (type, identifying feature in the national database maintaining the named feature, coordinates of the identification point); the coordinates of the area of influence of a place name on named features whose data are not contained in any other national database; information on the persons submitting data to the place names register; data on applicants for data from the place names register. The basis for the establishment and maintenance of the Estonian place names register is the Place Names Act, the regulation "Establishment of the State Place Names Register" and the "Statutes for the Maintenance of the State Place Names Register".
